INCA AWARDS 2011 - Cruddas Park Double Winner

Project of the Year

INCA Project of the Year 2011

Cruddas Park was crowned project of the
year in the INCA 2011 Awards for its dramatic
transformation of five 1960s high-rise blocks of
flats situated at the gateway to Newcastle city
centre.

The end result of the four-year £97.4
million regeneration scheme is an attractive
set of buildings offering improved thermal
performance and reduced energy costs for
residents.

The hard-to-treat homes benefitted
from the weber.therm XM EWI system,
comprising 100mm of mineral fibre, which has
reduced the U-value from 1.45 to 0.25W/m²K.o

What the Judges said...

'Cruddas Park is an inspirational project, which shows just what can be achieved with EWI not only in terms of improving a building's energy efficiency but overhauling its aesthetics and regenerating the surrounding area'

The dramatic transformation of Cruddas Park in Newcastle-upon-Tyne from five out-dated high-rise tower blocks into an eye catching development shows the extent to which EWI can improve the appearance of a building.

In an area that had been a long-standing priority for regeneration, the dramatic white polar dash render façades are in striking contrast to the blue detail panels coloured using a special blue acrylic finish, allowing natural light to illuminate the blocks and creating a crisp render finish.

The weber.therm XM EWI system, incorporating 100mm mineral fibre fixed to the substrate with mechanical screw fixings, reduced the U-value from 1.45W/m²K to 0.29W/m²K, which will help to improve living standards by increasing thermal efficiency and reducing energy costs.

What the Judges said…

'The clever use of EWI on these high-rise flats has refined the proportions of the buildings and the clean, simple design will age gracefully. Cruddas Park is a shining example of inner city living that is both aesthetically pleasing and thermally efficient making it an attractive proposition for residents.'

We are also very proud to say Astley achieved a Highly Commended in the Non-Residential category for our project at Alsop High School, Liverpool.
